Pigs must be flying: Shenmue 3 & The Last Guardian exist!
So today at 2:30am Sony had their E3 press conference. They were expected to show some cool new games, more of Uncharted 4 and maybe a price cut. Well we got all of that, with the exception being the latter, but what wasn’t expected was game-play of The Last Guardian actually making an appearance and…Shenmue 3 being announced.
Some back story, The Last Guardian is a game developed by the same team who made ICO and Shadow of the Colossus for the Playstation 2. Both sold poorly but were critically beloved and have developed a strong cult following. Then early in the Playstation 3’s life-cycle, The Last Guardian was announced with a trailer. Well the internet and the gaming press went crazy. Then well nothing materialised out side of a couple of trailers. It became the butt of many jokes every time Sony had a press conference. It has been about 7 years since that announcement and finally, FINALLY, it exists. It will be released in 2016 for the Playstation 4 and looks like a mixture of ICO’s puzzle solving and Shadow of the Colossus‘ use of animal companion – only instead of a horse it is some giant bird lion thing. Details are sketchy but it exists damn it!
Shenmue 3 is even weirder. The first two games came out for the Dreamcast (SEGA’s last console) in the early 00s. The first game was reportedly one of the most expensive games ever made and was received to critical acclaim and moderate sales. The game was a mixture of realistic life in Japan and crazy martial arts with an intense dramatic revenge fuelled story. It was supposed to be a trilogy but, after the second game came out, the entire franchise disappeared. SEGA stepped away from console manufacturing and concentrated on more sure fire hits, so weird and expensive games like Shenmue were never green-lit. Fast forward roughly fifteen years and Shenmue’s creator steps onto the Sony stage and announces that Shenmue 3 will be coming to PC and PS4, which is great, but has to be Kickstarted in order for it to happen, which is slightly less great. But hey, I am just happy that it is being made.
Never thought I would be talking about either of these games in my life.
